Samsung Group Chairman Lee Kun-hee who resigned from the International Olympic Committee(IOC) due to health reasons last month has been named an honorary member of the committee.
The IOC said it elected two former IOC members as honorary members on Saturday, the third day of its general assembly held in Lima, Peru.
The other person is Gerhard Heiberg from Norway.
The IOC customarily elects honorary members from its former members with noteworthy accomplishments and who have served for over ten years.
With the two additions, IOC honorary members have now increased to 42.
The Samsung chair was elected to the IOC in 1996 but has been hospitalized since May 2014 after suffering a heart attack.
IOC members elected before 1999 are reelected every eight years and can serve until age 80.
However, Lee's family asked the IOC last month not to consider him for reelection.
