Haein Temple’s Janggyeong Panjeon which houses the Tripitaka Koreana woodblocks was selected as the seventh most beautiful library in the world by Le Figaro Immobilier.
Hapcheon County in South Gyeongsang Province on Friday confirmed the selection of the world's ten most beautiful libraries made by the special edition of the French daily Le Figaro.
Built in 1488 in the early Goryeo era, the Janggyeong Panjeon is the oldest structure in Haein Temple and serves as the depository for the Buddhist sutras Tripitaka Koreana. The Tripitaka is the complete collection of Buddhist sutras inscribed on 87-thousand woodblocks.
Though the structure has undergone repair, it has maintained its basic frame all these years and is said to have effectively preserved woodblocks.
In 1995, the Janggyeong Panjeon was included in the UNESCO World Heritage list.
Among other libraries listed as the most beautiful were the Library of Trinity College Dublin, the Joanina Library in Portugal, the National Library of China, the Library of Alexandria in Egypt and the Library of Congress in Washington.
