Chung Mong-hun, the ill-starred heir of the Hyundai Group who ended his turbulent life by suicide was laid to rest after an emotion-filled funeral Friday.

Chung, 54, killed himself by jumping from the window of his 12th floor office in Seoul on Monday. He left a number of scribbled notes behind which gave no clear motives for his action.

Amid silent prayers and eulogies, 2,000 government officials, business leaders, foreign diplomats and relatives bid their final farewell to Chung during a one-hour funeral at Asan Medical Center in southern Seoul.

His body was later buried at a family graveyard south of Seoul alongside his late father and Hyundai Group founder, Chung Ju-yung, who died in 2001. The junior Chung inherited the Hyundai empire from his father in 1998.

Son Kil-seung, head of the Federation of Korean Industries said in a tearful voice that the nation's entire business community is in deep sorrow over the abrupt death of Chung, a pioneer in inter-Korean economic cooperation.

His North Korea ventures ran into deep trouble under heavy bank debts. Just prior to his death, he was engulfed in a scandal involving $500 million secretly transferred to North Korea just before the 2000 inter-Korean summit.
