President Moon Jae-in has promised government efforts for the benefit of elite professional sports and sports for all people.
On Friday, he vowed to continuously expand sports facilities and programs for all social classes and age groups including youths, the elderly, the marginalized, the disabled and also multicultural families.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 98th National Sports Festival held in Chungju, North Chungcheong Province, the president also noted the festival marks its centennial in two years.
He said the government is preparing a vision to further advance Korean sports. Moon pledged to foster a virtuous cycle in which gifted athletes are discovered and nurtured and professional athletes serve as instructors and leaders after retirement.
He also promised more systematic and scientific support for current players to demonstrate their best performance.
