Some 750 people were on hand to welcome the Olympic flame to the country at the ceremony in Incheon International Airport, including key officials from the organizing committee and sports stars like 2010 Olympic figure skating champion Kim Yuna.
Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon in his speech stressed the significance of hosting the Winter Games 30 years after the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

"This is the first time in 30 years the Olympic Games will be held in South Korea since 1988. Through the Seoul Olympics in 1988, South Korea made a leap towards the world and the world broke down the Cold War structure. Now as the name PyeongChang indicates, the PyeongChang Games will contribute to the peace and prosperity of South Korea and the world."
The festive mood reached its peak with singer Insooni singing the theme song "Let Everyone Shine."
The torch relay kicked off Wednesday with the first torch bearer being You Young, who made headlines for becoming the youngest national ladies' singles figure skating champion at age eleven last year.
The 101 torchbearers on the first day included popular comedian Yoo Jae-suk, singer and actress Suzy and speed skating champion Lee Sang-hwa.
The flame will travel a total of two-thousand-18 kilometers across South Korea -- signifying the 2018 games -- until it is delivered to the PyeongChang Olympic stadium on February ninth.
