AI Detected in Wild Bird Droppings in Jeju

Avian influenza has been detected in wild bird droppings on Jeju Island.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs said on Friday that a preliminary test confirmed a H5 strain in wild bird droppings collected Tuesday in the Gujwa area in Jeju City.

It will take about three to five days to confirm whether the virus is the highly pathogenic strain H5N6.

The ministry immediately banned the movement of poultry and livestock in a ten-kilometer radius of the area where the AI strain was detected for the next 21 days. It also designated the district a monitoring zone and plans to take quarantine measures.

There are 37 poultry farms in the area, raising 940-thousand chickens and ducks.
