South Korea has issued a 24-hour standstill order for poultry farms in six cities and provinces after a duck farm in South Jeolla Province has been confirmed to be infected with the H5 type of avian influenza.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs said that the 24-hour ban on the movement of people and vehicles will take effect as of Sunday midnight for Daejeon, Gwangju, Sejong, South Chungcheong Province, and South and North Jeolla Province. The ban is intended to contain the disease and prevent it from spreading any further.
The standstill will affect 22-thousand farms, 42 slaughterhouses, 94 animal feed factories and 18-thousand farm vehicles, banning all movement of people and vehicles.
The move came after the H5 type AI virus was confirmed at a duck farm in Yeongam in South Jeolla Province on Sunday. Some 16-thousand-700 ducks have already been culled as a precautionary measure. It is believed the source of the disease came from migratory birds.
