Supermoon to Rise on New Year's Day

A supermoon will be visible on the first day of the New Year.

According to NASA, 2018's first supermoon coincides with New Year's Day.

NASA says that a supermoon occurs when the moon is at or near its closest point in its orbit around earth and enters it full phase.

A supermoon generally appears to be 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter than a typical full moon.

NASA said that on January 31st, another supermoon will light up the sky known as the "blue supermoon."

A second full moon in a single month is called a blue moon, and they occur about every two and a half years.
