Trump Says 'We'll See' about Kim Jong-un's Nuclear Claim

U.S. President Donald Trump has avoided commenting on Kim Jong-un's New Year's speech, during which the North Korean leader warned that he has a "nuclear button" on his desk ready for use if the North is threatened.

Asked by reporters to comment on Kim’s speech on Monday, Trump simply said, “we’ll see, we’ll see,” as he walked into a New Year’s Eve celebration at Mar-a-Lago, his resort in Florida.

According to the Voice of America on Tuesday, a U.S. State Department official said the U.S. is in close contact with South Korea for a united response to the North.

In his speech, Kim warned that he has a nuclear button on his desk ready for use, but also said he was "open to dialogue" with Seoul and may send a North Korean delegation to the PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games as part of efforts to lower military tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

U.S. media was quick to report Kim's address. CNN said Kim held out a rare olive branch to the country's southern neighbor Monday, while CBS said Kim threatened the U.S. with his remarks about a "nuclear button."

Bloomberg said that Kim’s speech was the most promising peace overture from North Korea since President Trump took office, but that it will also test the strength of the U.S.-South Korean alliance.

Chinese media, meanwhile, said that the North Korean leader had extended a hand of peace toward South Korea in his New Year’s address ahead of the PyeongChang Olympics.

The English-language Global Times said Tuesday that “Kim Jong-un has shown greater diplomatic dexterity in his New Year speech by sending a reconciliatory signal to South Korea while maintaining his usual hard-line rhetoric toward the U.S.”
