8,000 Old Stone Age Relics Discovered in Goyang

Several thousand pieces of Old Stone Age artifacts have been discovered in a construction site on an expressway linking Seoul to northwest Gyeonggi Province.

The Gyeore Institute of Cultural Heritage said Friday that around eight-thousand Paleolithic relics presumed to have been used 40-thousand to 60-thousand years ago were unearthed near Haengsin Interchange on the Seoul-Munsan Expressway.

An official of the institute said the excavation work has been suspended since the beginning of the winter but will be resumed in March and carried out for two or three months.

A local scholar who visited the excavation site in Donae-dong, Goyang City said it is rare that such a large number of Paleolithic artifacts were clustered in such a small area, adding they will be important historical data shedding light on the changes from the middle Old Stone Age to the latter Old Stone Age.
