S. Korea to Beef up Quarantine Efforts to Prevent FMD Ahead of Olympics

South Korea will beef up quarantine efforts to prevent the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease ahead of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs said on Sunday that it will further enhance its quarantine efforts of the highly contagious animal disease until May.

The ministry said that cases of Type O and A of the disease are being reported in China since December and Mongolia recently reported the outbreak of Type O FMD.

According to the ministry, an average of 96-point-four percent of vaccinated cows developed an antibody to the disease, with the comparable figure for pigs reaching 76-point-six percent.

The ministry plans to check and inspect cattle and pig farms which fail to reach the average figures.
