Pres. Moon Okays Dismissal of KBS Chief

President Moon Jae-in has approved a motion seeking the dismissal of Ko Dae-young, the chief of South Korea's biggest public broadcaster KBS.

An official of the top office said that the president approved the motion via an electronic data system on Tuesday, adding that Ko will be removed from his position from 12 a.m. Wednesday.

The move came a day after KBS' board of directors passed the motion to dismiss Ko and following months of strikes by hundreds of KBS employees calling for Ko's resignation.

On January eighth, pro-government directors at KBS submitted a motion to the board to have Ko removed, citing his alleged role in hurting the broadcaster’s fairness and its internal democratic decision-making process. Employees believe Ko tried to suppress criticism against the former Park Geun-hye government by meddling in reporting.
