S. Korea Secures First Win at PyeongChang Olympics in Curling

Anchor: Although the opening ceremony has yet to take place, the sporting competition of the PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games began Thursday with curling and ski jumping. South Korea's curling team secured its first win by defeating Finland.

Report: The team of Jang Hye-ji and Lee Ki-jeong easily defeated Finland’s Oona Kauste and Tomi Rantamaeki 9-4 in the preliminary of the round robin session in mixed doubles curling on Thursday at the Gangneung Curling Center.
 
The duo earned three points in the first end and added one each in the second and third end. The Finnish team scored four points in the following three ends. However, South Korea added four additional points in the seventh, forcing Finland to give up. 
 
Curling mix double sessions have eight ends but Thursday’s match ended after seven with Finland abstaining.
 
The Korean duo will compete against China later on Thursday night and against Norway and the U.S. on Friday.

The men's normal hill individual ski jumping qualification is scheduled to take place at the Alpensia Ski Jumping Stadium.  
 
The competition will heat up in earnest after the opening ceremony which is set to begin at 8 p.m. on Friday at the PyeongChang Olympic Stadium.

A record two-thousand-925 athletes from 92 countries and regions set to participate in the games with a total of 102 gold medals are up for grabs in 15 separate categories.

Team Korea aims to garner eight golds, four silvers and eight bronzes to finish in the top four in the overall medal tally.
