Japan Off to Perfect Start in Team Figure Skating Event

Japanese figure skater Shoma Uno performed a near-perfect routine Friday to give his country an early lead in the figure skating team event at the PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games.

Uno was awarded a score of 103-point-25 points for his performance at the Gangneung Ice Arena, ensuring that he will finish first in the men’s short program of the team event.

Alexei Bychenko of Israel came in second, followed by Canada’s Patrick Chan. American Nathan Chen, one of the favorites for the individual event, fell during his routine to leave him in fourth.

South Korea’s Cha Jun-hwan placed sixth out of the ten competing skaters.

The team event sees competitors from the world's top ten figure skating nations compete in all four of the sport's disciplines, which are the men and women's singles, pair skating and ice dance. The top five nations then advance to the free program.
