'Pohang Quake had No Impact on Safety of Nuclear Reactors'

South Korea's nuclear safety commission says that an earthquake that hit the southeastern city of Pohang early Sunday had no impact on the safety of the nation's 25 nuclear power plants and radioactive waste disposal facilities.

The Nuclear Safety and Security Commission on Sunday confirmed that no nuclear reactors issued earthquake alerts or stopped operations due to the four-point-six magnitude quake that occurred at 5:03 a.m. Sunday.

Right after the quake, the commission announced that they are conducting emergency safety checkups on the country's nuclear power plants and radioactive waste disposal facilities.

The commission and its local offices went into emergency operation mode in order to prepare for any unexpected situation.
