The South Korean women's curling team has defeated top-ranked Canada in the preliminary round at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics.

The four-member Korean team led by skip Kim Eun-jung on Thursday beat Canada 8-6 in the women's round robin session 2 at Gangneung Curling Center.

Canada, a curling powerhouse which won the World Women's Curling Championship last year, is considered the strongest team at the Olympics.

Ten teams will compete in the preliminary round and the top four teams will advance to the semifinals.

South Korea will face Japan at 8:05 p.m. Thursday.
