A local branch of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Culture Organization said Wednesday that Jeju Island was selected as a venue for UNESCO's 2005 Northeast Asian regional meeting on biosphere reserves.

The branch said UNESCO's regional meeting in Mongolia on Aug. 18-22 decided to hold the next biennial meeting in the South Korean resort island.

It said Jeju's Mount Halla, Seogwipo and their vicinities were designated by UNESCO in May as the country's third biosphere reserve following Mount Seorak in South Korea and Mount Paekdu in North Korea.

Biosphere reserves are pilot sites, which perform three complementary functions: bio-diversity conservation development and logistic support.
