A Russian curling athlete, who won a medal at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, has reportedly left the games amid suspicions of doping.
Russian delegation spokesman Konstantin Vybornov told Reuters on Monday that Alexander Krushelnitsky surrendered his games accreditation and left the Olympic village while waiting for the result of a sample test.
Krushelnitsky, who won a bronze medal together with his wife and fellow athlete Anastasia Bryzgalova in mixed doubles curling last Tuesday, is suspected of testing positive for meldonium, a banned performance-enhancing drug.
However, Mark Adams, a spokesman for the International Olympic Committee(IOC), said in an interview with Russia’s TASS that the IOC has yet to verify an allegation that a certain athlete left PyeongChang due to a doping allegation.
Russian athletes are competing at PyeongChang individually under the title of “Olympic Athletes from Russia” after the IOC banned Russia’s participation in the Olympics amid suspicions of the country's role in its athletes taking banned substances.
