The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade said Thursday that three South Korean nongovernmental organization members detained by Chinese authorities in Shanghai for trying to help North Korean refugees were released.

A ministry official said China freed Kim Ki-joo and two others, who have since returned to South Korea. The human rights activists were apprehended by Chinese security forces on Aug. 8th.

The three Korean nationals and an economics professor at Osaka University were involved in helping North Korean refugees enter a Japanese school so they could seek political asylum in a third country.
