S. Korea Set to Designate 'Ondol' Heating System as Intangible Cultural Asset

Korea's unique underfloor heating system called "ondol" will likely be designated as one of the country's intangible cultural assets.

The Cultural Heritage Administration on Friday issued a notice on the possible designation.

Ondol, an underfloor heating that uses direct heat transfer from wood smoke to heat the underside of a thick masonry floor, is a two-thousand year old Korean traditional housing culture.

The administration will make a final decision on the designation after a month long deliberation by the intangible cultural asset committee.
