S. Korea Issues Alert on Chinese Satellite's Reentry

The South Korean government has issued an alert on the reentry of a Chinese satellite expected to crash to the earth within days.

The Ministry of Science and ICT said it expects the Tiangong-1 will hit the ground between 6:03 p.m. on Sunday and 2:03 p.m. on Monday.

Albeit a low possibility, South Korea is within the possible crash area, and the ministry put the alarm system against outer space risks at “alert” at 4 p.m. on Friday. It will raise the alarm level to “serious” if the Chinese satellite is confirmed to pose a real threat to the country.

It is said that the ministry will be able to predict the satellite’s exact crash spot two hours before it falls to the ground.

The ministry also instructed South Korean citizens to restrain from going outdoors around the time it is expected to fall while remaining alert to related media coverage. It also asked them to report any material suspected to be debris from the satellite without touching it.
