Inter-Korean Summit Expected to Produce Tension-Easing Measures

The scheduled presence of four top military leaders from South and North Korea at the inter-Korean summit is raising the expectation the historic summit will produce significant measures to ease military tensions between the two Koreas.

Defense Minister Song Young-moo and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Jeong Kyeong-doo will accompany President Moon Jae-in at Friday’s summit, while North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will be flanked by the North’s Defense Minister Pak Yong-sik, and Ri Myong-su, chief of the General Staff of the North's Korean People's Army.

Seoul’s military officials are expecting intensive discussions on measures to ease military presences in the Demilitarized Zone(DMZ) during the summit.

Possible measures expected to be discussed include withdrawing guard posts from the DMZ or pulling them further apart from each other, and readjusting barbed-wire fences or removing heavy firearms.
