A South Korean diplomat was elected chairman of a key committee of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Monday.

In a vote by representatives of 35 countries, Ahn Jae-hyun, first secretary of the Korean Intellectual Property Office, was unanimously selected to preside over this year's meeting of the WIPO's Program and Budget Committee (PBC).

Ahn is the first South Korean official to be elected as chairman of a WIPO committee since his country first became a member of the U.N.-affiliated agency in 1979.

The PBC is convened once a year to review the WIPO's major projects and budget. This year's meeting opened Monday for a three-day run.
