Heavy rain, along with thunder and lightning, is pounding Seoul, Gyeonggi and Gangwon provinces on Thursday, with parts of the region hit by over 50 millimeters of torrential rain.

As of 9:10 a.m., heavy rain warnings are in place for Seoul, Gyeonggi Province and western Gangwon Province.

Early on Thursday at around 4:30 a.m., Paldang Station on the Gyeongui-Jungang Line was struck by lightning which caused the suspension of operations of Seoul-bound trains.

The incident also crippled the operations of subway trains on the Gyeongui-Jungang Line and KTX trains on the Gangneung Line.

With the heavy downpour, Paldang Dam in Gyeonggi Province has been releasing about 19-hundred tons of water per second since 7 a.m.

The Korea Meteorological Administration expects rain until Friday morning.
