Renowned hanbok designer Lee Young-hee died in the early hours of Thursday at the age of 82.

Lee’s daughter, Lee Jung-woo, told Seoul-based Yonhap News that her mother was hospitalized last month due to pneumonia and her condition had worsened since.

Born in Daegu in 1936, Lee became a designer of the traditional Korean attire at the relatively late age of 40 after having lived as a housewife.

Having received no official education in fashion design, Lee drew worldwide attention when she became the first South Korean to take part in the Pret-a-Porter Paris fashion shows in 1993.

She again caught the attention of the public when her grandson married famous Korean actress Jun Ji-hyun in 2012.
