115 People Dead or Missing from Typhoon Maemi

It has been four days since devastating Typhoon Maemi pounded the country, but the damage report continues to rise. The Central Anti-Disaster Headquarters said that as of early Monday morning, the death toll stood at 87, while 28 people are missing. The anti-disaster agency added that more than 89-hundred people had been left homeless after some four-thousand households were submerged under water. Also, some 17-thousand hectares of farm land were inundated. Property damage is initially estimated at more than one trillion won or some nine hundred million U.S. dollars. The estimate is feared to rise further as damage reports continue to trickle in. The agency said that once it finishes compiling estimates, it will announce the designation of special disaster areas and grant exemption from local taxes for residents of areas hit by the powerful storm.
