Some 200 agricultural activists from around the world gathered in Cancun, Mexico Sunday (local time) to mourn the death of a South Korean farmer who committed suicide during a protest at the recent World Trade Organization (WTO) ministerial meeting.

Lee Kyung-hae, former head of the Korean Advanced Farmers Federation (KAFF), stabbed himself in the chest during a rally here Wednesday.

The 56-year-old activist died from massive blood loss hours after being rushed to hospital.

Among the mourners were members of Lee's family, who arrived in Mexico Saturday, KAFF President Seo Jeong-eui, Rafael Alegrina, president of global farmers' group Via Campesina and other civic activists.

Lee's body is scheduled to arrive in Seoul Thursday for a funeral the following day.
