U.S. President Donald Trump did not deny that he and a top North Korean official had discussed a possible reduction of U.S. forces in South Korea at the White House on Friday.
The White House on Sunday released the transcript of Trump’s conversation with reporters outside the Oval Office on Friday. The question-and-answer session followed his meeting with Vice Chairman of the Central Committee of the North’s ruling Workers' Party Kim Yong-chol.
According to the transcript, Trump did not directly answer a question on whether Kim asked about the size of the U.S. forces in South Korea, instead replying that they talked “about almost everything.” The president then moved on to the subject of sanctions on North Korea.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump and Kim did talk about a possible reduction of U.S. troops in South Korea, triggering speculation that the issue could be on the agenda at the U.S.-North Korea summit.
However, U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis on Saturday made it clear at a security forum in Singapore that U.S. troops in Korea is not an issue that is up for discussion with North Korea.
