The top diplomats of South Korea and the United States held phone talks Monday over the upcoming North Korea-U.S. summit.

The Foreign Ministry said that Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha and her U.S. counterpart Mike Pompeo spoke on the phone at 8 a.m. Monday.

According to the ministry, the two officials held an in-depth discussion on the recent developments in preparation for the summit, including the outcome of a top North Korean official's meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington last week.

The two sides also agreed to continue close cooperation and consultation before and after the summit to explore ways to achieve the complete denuclearization of the North and a lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula.
