Uruguay qualified for the last-16 stage of the FIFA World Cup on Wednesday with a narrow 1-0 win over Saudi Arabia in Rostov-on-Don.
Barcelona striker Luis Suarez scored in the 23rd minute on his 100th international appearance to seal Uruguay’s second win of the tournament.
The result also ensured that host Russia progressed to the last 16-stage, with both Russia and Uruguay collecting six points from their two Group A games. The two countries will play each other next Monday to determine which team will top the group.
Meanwhile, in Group B, Portugal defeated Morocco 1-0 in Moscow thanks to Cristiano Ronaldo’s early header. The goal continued Ronaldo’s stunning start to the World Cup, as the Portuguese captain is currently the tournament’s top scorer with four goals.
In the day’s other match in Group B, Spain beat Iran 1-0 in a tight game in Kazan, with striker Diego Costa scoring the only goal shortly after half-time.
