The Ministry of Construction and Transportation said a South Korean-built high-speed train broke the milestone speed of 300 km per hour in a test run Wednesday, making South Korea the world's fifth nation to possess such advanced technology.

The ministry said a Korean-type bullet train, jointly built by Rotem and Hyundai Heavy Industries, recorded speeds of over 300 km per hour during a test drive held on the Cheonan-Daejeon section of the Seoul-Busan high-speed railway.

The speed of 300 km per hour is on par with airplane takeoff speed and is about 50 km faster than that of French company Alstom-built high-speed trains.

The new line will begin commercial service on the Seoul-Busan and Seoul-Mokpo routes from April 2004.
