Anchor: South Korea will be looking to make FIFA World Cup history this week as it seeks to become the first team to progress to the last-16 stage of the 32-team tournament after losing its first two games. The Taeguk Warriors take on Germany in a must-win clash on Wednesday.
Our Laurence Taylor has the details.

Report: Despite losing its first two games, South Korea still has a small chance of progressing to the last-16 stage of the FIFA World Cup if it can defeat defending champions Germany on Wednesday.

South Korea lost to Sweden 1-0 in its opening Group F match, before suffering a 2-1 defeat to Mexico on Saturday.

The results mean that the Taeguk Warriors currently sit bottom of Group F with zero points, while Mexico lead the group with six points. Germany and Sweden each have three points.

However, if South Korea beat Germany by at least two goals and Mexico defeat Sweden on Wednesday, Team Korea will finish second in the group based on goal difference.

The top two teams from each group qualify for the last-16 stage.

If South Korea do manage to progress beyond the group stage, it will become the first team to qualify for the last-16 of the World Cup after losing its first two game since the tournament was expanded to 32 countries in 1998.

Shin Tae-yong’s side will have to play Germany without captain Ki Sung-yueng, however, who suffered a calf injury in the defeat to Mexico.

Meanwhile, six teams have already sealed their place in the last-16 stage of the tournament. Host Russia, Uruguay, France, England, Belgium and Croatia have all qualified for the knockout round with one game each left to play.

Top teams Brazil, Spain, and Portugal are likely to join them, but Argentina is in danger of exiting the competition at an early stage. The South Americans need to beat Nigeria on Tuesday and hope that Iceland does not defeat Croatia to progress.
