Government data shows an increased volume of warm water fish have been caught around the Korean Peninsula since 1990, while cold current fish have been on the decline.

According to Statistics Korea data on Monday, the warmer water temperature has increased the catch of mackerel, anchovies and common squid and decreased the haul of pollack, mackerel pike and sailfin sandfish in waters near South Korea.

Subtropical fish such as blue mackerel and tuna were also found to be caught in a larger volume.

The average surface level water temperature has been steadily rising in South Korea from 16 degrees Celsius in 1970 to 17-point-two degrees last year.
