The operation of coal-fired power plants will be restricted when levels of fine dust increase.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced the measure on Thursday, following discussions with the Environment Ministry and local government representatives from seven regions which house such power plants.

The restriction will be introduced in October on a trial basis before full implementation next year.

The measure will allow mayors and governors to request the power plants to operate at 80 percent of their full capacity on days when fine dust advisories are issued and levels are predicted to exceed 50 micrograms per cubic meter the following day.
