Colombia and Japan both reached the last-16 stage of the FIFA World Cup on Thursday, with the Asian side progressing based on its disciplinary record in comparison to Group H rival Senegal.
Colombia defeated Senegal 1-0 thanks to Yerry Mina’s header to top Group H with six points, while Japan lost 1-0 to Poland after Jan Bednarek netted for the European side.
The results meant that Japan finished with the same number of points, goals scored and goals conceded as Senegal, but secured second place in the group after receiving two fewer yellow cards.
Meanwhile, in Group G, Belgium beat England 1-0 through Adnan Januzaj’s spectacular strike to finish top of the group ahead of its opponent. In the day’s other game in the group, Tunisia defeated Panama 2-1 to claim its first win of the tournament.
Belgium will play Japan in the round of 16 on Monday, while England will take on Colombia on Tuesday.
