The government has checked its preparedness for typhoons amid growing possibility a system will soon approach the Korean Peninsula.

Minister of the Interior and Safety Kim Boo-kyum presided over an emergency meeting Friday to prepare for the season’s seventh typhoon, known as Prapiroon, which formed over waters southeast of Okinawa, Japan.

During the meeting, attended by senior officials of the National Disaster and Safety Status Control Center and the vice heads of municipal and provincial offices, Kim pointed out only one typhoon has hit the Korean Peninsula in the last five years, so the country needs to offset its lack of experience with proactive preparedness.

The minister instructed the officials to prepare for worst-case scenarios and be in emergency response mode, even during holidays, in order to prevent casualties.

He also asked the public to restrain from going outside or visiting dangerous areas during storms.
