Choo Shin-soo of the Texas Rangers has become the first South Korean position player to be selected to play in the Major League Baseball(MLB) All-Star Game. 

The MLB league office on Monday announced the list of the players to take part in the annual game between players of the American League and the National League to be held in Washington on July 17th. 

The 35-year-old Korean slugger was included on the list as a reserve outfielder for the American League All-Star team to become the first South Korean position player to be picked for the match.  

The two previous South Koreans to play in the game, Park Chan-ho and Kim Byung-hyun, were both pitchers. 

Although Choo failed to be selected in the fan vote, which determined the starters for the game, he made the roster as a reserve player through a vote by the players, managers and coaches based on his stellar performance this season. 

So far this season, he has a point-293 batting average with 52 runs scored, 17 home runs and 42 RBIs in 86 games, and has a point-399 on-base percentage and a point-504 slugging percentage. 

On Sunday, Choo also broke his club’s single-season on-base record held by Julio Franco in 1993, by reaching base in 47 consecutive games.
