The Seoul Metropolitan Government will seek to include massive candlelight protests held in the capital in UNESCO's Memory of the World Register.
On Thursday, the city government said that it has put up a notice to select experts who will produce a detailed strategy to achieve the goal.
The city said that there have been related discussions since last year when Mayor Park Won-soon stressed the value of peaceful candlelight protests held in the city.
South Koreans held massive street rallies peacefully holding candles in central Seoul in 2016 and 2017 to protest over a corruption scandal involving then President Park Geun-hye and her confidant Choi Soon-sil. Similar candlelight protests were also held in 2002 and 2008 on diverse issues.
The city plans to select the rallies it will seek to list in UNESCO's Memory of the World Register, which is a collection of global documentary heritage chosen for its world significance and outstanding universal value.
