Olympic figure skater Denis Ten has been stabbed to death in Kazakhstan in an attempted robbery.

According to Kazakh news agency Kazinform and other local media, the Kazakh figure skater of Korean descent was stabbed by two unidentified men who allegedly tried to steal mirrors from his vehicle in Almaty at 3 p.m. Thursday.

The 25-year old skater was reportedly rushed to hospital but pronounced dead after suffering significant blood loss.

Ten won a bronze medal in the men's singles at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, becoming the first figure skater from Kazakhstan to reach the Olympic podium.

Ten was the great-great-grandson of esteemed Korean general Min Keung-ho, who fought for the country's independence from Japanese colonial rule during the time of the Korean Empire.
