South Korea’s provision of eight million U.S. dollars in aid to North Korea via UN organizations is likely to gain speed following the UN Security Council's adoption of guidelines to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to the reclusive state.
A government official in Seoul revealed the possibility on Tuesday, saying the provision was promised by Seoul to UN agencies.
Last September, Seoul pledged eight million dollars to the World Food Programme and UNICEF's projects supporting North Korean infants and expectant mothers, but plans were halted amid Pyongyang's continued nuclear and missile provocations.
The UN Security Council guidelines adopted Monday are designed to expedite the process of its sanctions committee granting a waiver of exemptions to humanitarian aid operations in the North.
The guidelines recommend governments and nongovernmental organizations submit their requests in a letter with ten elements, including a description of the items to be delivered and assurances the goods will be used for their intended purposes.
