The former manager of the Portuguese national football team, Paulo Bento, has been selected as the new head coach of South Korea's national team.

The Korea Football Association’s top recruiter Kim Pan-gon held a news conference on Friday and made the choice official.

Details of Bento's four-and-a-half year contract were not unveiled, but he is expected to become the highest paid foreign coach in South Korea's history, topping his predecessor Uli Stielike who was paid roughly one-and-a-half billion won.

Bento is set to arrive in South Korea next Monday and unveil the list of players who will be called up for the national team a week later.

Bento will lead the Taegeuk Warriors in a friendly against Costa Rica on September seventh and against Chile on September eleventh.

Bento played 35 international matches for Portugal and managed the national team between 2010 and 2014, leading it to the semifinals of the UEFA European Championship in 2012.
