The Voice of America(VOA) is taking issue with a new English translation of the Panmunjeom Declaration recently submitted to the United Nations, arguing it's different from what was originally agreed during the inter-Korean summit in April.

The media outlet says the new English version contains the expression that the two Koreas agreed to declare within this year to formally end the Korean War, which it said was absent in the original Korean version, let alone the previous English version. VOA said it suspects it's an attempt to create flexibility in negotiations over the war-ending declaration.

In response, South Korea's presidential office said the latest one is correct and is the official version. The VOA pointed out that Seoul never revealed earlier that the previous version was an unofficial translation.

An official at the top office said the previous English version was drafted as a reference to reporters during the North Korea-U.S. summit in Singapore in June, conceding they made a mistake by not clarifying it was unofficial.

Seoul’s Foreign Ministry said the new English version was a follow-up measure to April’s inter-Korean summit at the UN level, noting it was pushed for under the agreement between the two Koreas.
