President Roh Moo-hyun said Thursday he will do his best to promote the welfare of senior citizens, as South Korea heads rapidly toward becoming an aging society.

In a ceremony held at Seoul's Olympic Park to mark the 7th Seniors' Day, Roh said that he would make this the first year dedicated to improving seniors' welfare.

He said a presidential task force formed to cope with the quickly increasing aging population will work out comprehensive measures to create more jobs for elderly citizens and increase their benefits from social security projects.

The president said the measures will include legislation from a related bill.
