The government will kick off the work next year to relocate the U.S. military headquarters out of central Seoul. The decision came at a meeting of relevant cabinet ministers presided over by Prime Minister Goh Kun on Saturday. The government will set up a special committee which will oversee the relocation project. Prime Minister Goh Kun will head the panel to be comprised of relevant cabinet ministers, the Seoul mayor and the governor of Gyeonggi Province, among others. The committee will come up with a master plan for the relocation project within a year and purchase the land for a new garrison site in the Osan-Pyongtaek area and start construction designs early next year for facilities which will house the U.S. military headquarters. The government also plans to sign an accord with the United States on the relocation of the garrison soon and submit it to the National Assembly for approval during its regular session this year. Prime Minister Goh also told the participants at the meeting to draw up a plan to build at the site of the Yongsan Garrison a park similar to the Central Park in New York.
