A civic group said Tuesday that a major U.S. publisher has agreed to rectify incorrect and distorted information regarding Korean history in texts for the U.S. Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT).
The Seoul-based Voluntary Agency Network of Korea (VANK) -- a group of civilians promoting South Korea -- said the publisher McGraw Hill had sent the group a letter saying it would revise the contents in the SAT texts to be published next year.
According to VANK, some world history texts for the SAT depict the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) as a subject state of the Ching Dynasty of China (1636-1912).
Park Ki-tae, a VANK official called it very encouraging to have an opportunity to enable U.S. students to have a correct understanding of Korean history.
About 12,000 VANK members, who are sometimes referred to as "cyber civilian diplomats" here, provide detailed information on Korea to 800 million netizens around the world via their Web sites (www.prkorea.com or www.prkorea.org).
