The Foreign Ministry said Tuesday that the South Korean Embassy in Afghanistan has been evacuated in response to an intelligence report that the mission may be the target of an impending terrorist attack.

The ministry said in a statement that most of the embassy's officials have taken shelter at the nation's diplomatic mission in a neighboring country, but at least one official remains at a "safe place" in Afghanistan for the purpose of communication with the Afghan government and protection of Korean nationals.

The ministry said the embassy obtained an intelligence report from the U.N. Assistance Mission in Afghanistan on Monday that Al Qaeda or Taliban forces may be planning a suicide bomb attack against the Korean Embassy during the Ramadan period.

The ministry instructed embassy officials to persuade Korean nationals in Afghanistan to refrain from going outside. It also posted a travel advisory on its Internet homepage asking people not to travel to Kabul until the end of this month.
