A government agency for the disabled said Monday that, for the third consecutive year, South Korea has won more medals than any other country in the Olympic Games for the physically challenged.

The Korea Employment Promotion Agency for the Disabled said that at the Nov. 23-29 Abilympics in New Delhi, which saw the participation of 1,500 athletes from over 30 countries, the South Korean team wound up atop the medal tally, with 13 golds, 5 silvers and 2 bronzes.

South Korea was previously the top winner of the event for disabled athletes at the 1995 games in Australia and the 2000 games in the Czech Republic.

The name of the event is derived from the words "ability" and "Olympics."

The 30-member South Korean team was followed in the medal standings by Taiwan, which had three golds, three silvers and four bronzes, and Thailand.

The first Abilympics were held in Japan in 1981 and continued in Columbia (1985), Hong Kong (1991), Australia (1995) and the Czech Republic (2000).

South Korea's Abilympic team is scheduled to return home later in the day.
