Saddam Hussein Captured Alive Near Tikrit

American forces have captured Saddam Hussein in a farmhouse near his home town Tikrit.

Washington said Saddam was captured Saturday at 8:30 pm in a cellar in the town of Adwar near Tikrit, Iraq.

The arrest, which came eight months after the fall of Baghdad, was carried out without a shot fired. It was a huge victory for U.S. forces.
A U.S. defense official said Saddam admitted his identity when captured.
The top U.S. military commander in Iraq, Lt. Col. Ricardo Sanchez said the deposed leader "has been cooperative and is talkative." He described Saddam as "a tired man, a man resigned to his fate."
In the capital, radio stations played celebratory music and residents fired small arms in the air in celebration.
Saddam was being held at an undisclosed location, and U.S. authorities have not determined whether to hand him to stand trial before a war crimes tribunal created last week. Two other Iraqis were also arrested in the raid.
Meanwhile, the South Korean government hailed the capture of Saddam Hussein in a statement. A Foreign Ministry spokesman said...Seoul hopes that it would help stabilize the situation in Iraq.
