Pope John Paul the Second held a Christmas Eve mass at St. Peter's Cathedral at the Vatican and prayed in earnest for world peace.

During his sermon in front of thousands of Catholic faithful, the Pope lamented past bloodshed and prayed for the hearts of men to be purified so that violence and conflict might subside in this world.
