Gov't Announces Preventative Measures on Mad Cow Disease

The Agriculture and Fisheries Ministry announced Friday new comprehensive preventative measures against the domestic spread of mad cow disease, as concerns about the contagious disease continue to build in the nation.

The ministry's measures are mainly focused on allaying the public's concerns about the fatal disease by conducting a thorough quarantine process on all U.S. beef products in the domestic market.

The measures also include plans to address the management of all domestic beef reserves and future demand for beef.

The ministry also began tracing imported U.S. beef distribution networks in the domestic market that may have included the spine bones and intestines of slaughtered cattle, believed to be among the cattle parts that are most likely to contain high levels of the malignant prions or proteins that are believed to cause the disease.
